They were going to visit the house of hare&#8217;s uncle. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>They travelled over hills and valleys until they came to a river. Beside the river, an old woman was washing herself. \u201cPlease\u201d, the old woman asked the hare, \u201chelp me to wash my back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not,\u201d the hare replied.<\/p>\n<p>Then the old woman saw the crown bird. \u201cPlease\u201d, the old woman asked the crown bird, \u201chelp me to wash my back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes, I will,\u201d the crown bird replied and began to help the old woman. \u201cWhy do you bother yourself on such a task?\u201d the hare said to the crown bird, \u201cI will leave you to do this unrewarding job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the crown bird had finished helping the old woman, she said to him, \u201cDip your wings and your legs into the water of this river.\u201d The crown bird did so. When he withdrew them, on his legs he discovered bracelets of great value and on the tips of his wings, there were precious rings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDip your beak into the water of this river,\u201d said the old woman. The crown bird did so, and when the old woman told him to bring out his beak, he brought out beautiful clothing. \u201cNow once again\u201d, the old woman said, \u201cDip your wings into the water of this river.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, the crown bird did as he was told, and bringing out his wings at the old woman&#8217;s command, he found a very beautiful horse standing beside him. \u201cThe bracelets, the rings, the clothing, the horse all are for you,\u201d said the old woman to the crown bird. \u201cI am grateful for the way you behaved when I asked you for help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The happy crown bird mounted his new horse. It was a fast one and they soon caught up with hare. \u201cHow amazing\u201d, cried the hare, \u201cyou have bracelets, rings, and fine clothes and you are riding a beautiful horse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes\u201d, replied the crown bird \u201call this because of the old woman by the river.\u201d Then he told the hare what happened. \u201cContinue on your journey\u201d, the hare cried, \u201cI&#8217;m going back to that old woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the hare reached the river, the old woman was still there. \u201cPlease let me help you,\u201d he said smiling at her. \u201cShall I ask you again if you will help wash my back?\u201d \u201cYes, yes &#8211; I will very willingly help you\u201d cried the hare.<\/p>\n<p>At first, the old woman refused to be helped, but then the hare continued to beg her to let him help, and she agreed. When the hare had finished helping her, she told him to put his legs and paws in the water of the river. The hare did so. When he withdrew them, they were covered with old and dirty bracelets and broken rings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry again\u201d, said the old woman. But when the hare again drew his paws from the water of the river he held old and dirty clothing. \u201cTry again,\u201d repeated the old woman. But when for the third time the hare withdrew his paws from the water, he brought out the worst of all, a horse that was very ugly, short, and thin.<\/p>\n<p>The hare, with his dirty old bracelets, rings and clothing mounted on his worthless horse and continued on his journey. The horse moved very slowly.
