{"id":1500,"date":"2017-01-24T12:36:27","date_gmt":"2017-01-24T12:36:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/combonimission.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=1500"},"modified":"2017-01-24T12:37:54","modified_gmt":"2017-01-24T12:37:54","slug":"synod-on-young-people-listening-to-everyone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/combonimissionaries.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/01\/24\/synod-on-young-people-listening-to-everyone\/","title":{"rendered":"Synod On Young People: Listening To Everyone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Listening to everyone \u201cwithout exception\u201d, \u201cabandoning the rigid attitudes which make the proclamation of the joy of the Gospel less credible\u201d and avoiding &#8220;anachronism.\u201d It is the goal of the preparatory document of the Synod for Young People. The Synod will take place in October 2018. We look at the Preparatory Document of the Synod.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo encounter, accompany and care for every young person, without exception.\u201d <\/em>It is the prospect of the Preparatory Document of the Synod for young people planned to take place in October 2018 on the theme:<em> \u201cYoung people, the faith and vocational discernment.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\nThere are many \u201cdifferences\u201d between the youths of the five Continents \u2013notably according to gender, masculine and feminine\u2013 but youths aged 16-23 all share the same situation marked by <em>\u201cunprecedented fluidity and uncertainty<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0Compared to a privileged few, \u201c<em>many people live in a precarious and insecure situation, which has an impact on the course and choices taken in life\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Challenges include multiculturalism. In many parts of the world young people experience extremely harsh living conditions. Despite the many sombre scenarios,\u00a0<em>\u201cmany wish to be an active part in the process of change taking place at this present time\u201d.<\/em>\u00a0On the opposite front, lies the phenomenon of NEET (not in education, employment or training).<\/p>\n<p>A church \u201c<em>that is closer to people and more attentive to social issues\u201d &#8211;<\/em>\u00a0that\u2019s how young people would like the Church to be, in a context where \u201c<em>confessional adherence and religious practice are increasingly becoming minority traits, and although young people are not in open \u201copposition\u201d, they learn to live \u201cwithout\u201d the God presented by the Gospel and \u201cwithout\u201d the Church, choosing alternative and minimally-institutionalized forms of religion and spirituality or seeking refuge in sects or religious experiences with strong identitarian connotations.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The reality of young people is ever-more hyper-connected and its opportunities and risks need to be closely examined. That\u2019s why \u201c<em>it is very important to focus on how the experience of technologically mediated relations might structure the conception of the world, of reality and interpersonal relationships. <\/em><br \/>\n<em> On this basis, the Church is called to evaluate her pastoral activity, which needs to develop an appropriate culture\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cToday I choose this, tomorrow we\u2019ll see\u201d.<\/em> This is the prevailing axiom that makes young people\u2019s choices increasingly difficult, consisting in <em>\u201coptions which can always be reversed rather than definitive choices\u201d<\/em>. In this respect, <em>\u201cthe old approaches no longer work and the experience passed on by previous generations quickly becomes obsolete\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>To recognize<\/em>\u201d, \u201c<em>to interpret<\/em>\u201d, and \u201c<em>to choose<\/em>\u201d. These three verbs from the Pastoral Letter <em>Evangelii Gaudium<\/em> encompass the essence of \u201c<em>vocational discernment<\/em>\u201d. <em>\u201cEvery way of life imposes a choice, because a person cannot remain indefinitely in an undetermined state\u201d.<\/em> Hence the importance of personal accompaniment, which is not confined to the theory of discernment. Rather, <em>\u201cit is a question of fostering a person\u2019s relationship with God and helping to remove what might hinder it\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHerein lies the difference between accompaniment in discerning and psychological support.<\/em><em>Going out; Seeing; Calling.\u201d<\/em> These three verbs from <em>Evangelii Gaudium<\/em> are at the centre of the third and last section of the document, which answers the focal question, \u00a0<em>\u201cHow does the Church help young people accept their call to the joy of the Gospel, especially in these times of uncertainty, volatility and insecurity?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The suggested remedy is <em>\u201ca joint response to the challenge of pastoral care and the pastoral care of vocations, mindful of the differences\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Going out means \u201c<em>leaving behind a framework which makes people feel hemmed-in; \u201cseeing\u201d requires the willingness \u201cto spend time with them, to listen to the story of their lives; \u201ccalling\u201d means rekindling desire; jarring people from what blocks them, asking questions which have no ready-made answers\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Finally, pastoral vocational care <em>\u201cmeans to accept the invitation of Pope Francis: \u201cgoing out\u201d, primarily, by abandoning the rigid attitudes which make the proclamation of the joy of the Gospel less credible, leaving behind a framework which makes people feel hemmed-in and giving up a way of acting as Church which at times is out-dated\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe entire Christian community should feel the responsibility of educating new generations\u201d<\/em>, states the final part of the document that invites <em>\u201cto give major importance to young people\u2019s involvement in the structures of participation in diocesan and parish communities, starting with pastoral councils\u201d.<\/em> This leaves no room for \u201c<em>unpreparedness and a lack of skill\u201d. <\/em>It requires authoritative believers, with a clear human identity, a strong sense of belonging to the Church.
